Artist's Biography

Karen Wilcox - painter and sculptorI am an observer of nature and human nature. In the mid 1970's I left my hometown on the Nebraska prairie and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, working several years as a technical illustrator and photographer before returning to school to earn my B.F.A. at Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

I maintain a studio in northeast Minneapolis, working in oil media painting and cast bronze sculpture. My work has shown in over fifty exhibits since 1994.

Artist's Statement:

Color, Form, Movement: the Poetic Dialog between Intention and Intuition

My images and objects tell about life experiences–real as well as imaginary. The creatures that become manifest in my imagery are mythological: they embody my sense of wonder about the physical and non-physical realities we create for ourselves and the perpetual struggle to cope with who we are.

At times, I abandon the figure altogether and allow narrative intention to give way to the pure intuitive forces of color, luminosity, form and movement.

My work is an honest offering of kinship to my viewer/participant: an invitation to explore infinite worlds within and without the physical self.

This is my story. Tell me yours.
